2012-01-10 [Avaz]: I highly, highly recommend The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man's Fear, books 1 and 2 of the Kingkiller Chronicles, both by Patrick Rothfuss. They're long books, but so effing good, it's hard to put down.
2012-01-10 [Nioniel]: Thank you. :3
2012-01-10 [Ravendust]: I would recommend anything by Kay Hooper. Namely - The "Bishop" Special Crimes Unit Series. Also The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. All are very good books that I find myself reading over and over! :)
2012-01-10 [Nioniel]: Would the Special Crimes Unit Series be fairly graphic as far as sexual abuse goes?
2012-01-10 [Ravendust]: no, its not special in that sense, special crimes is pretty much a unit of psychic/people with special abilities.
2012-01-10 [Nioniel]: Ahh. For some reason my mind connected that with Special Victims Unit for that one crime show. :/
Okay, thanks, I'll look into it and see if it would interest me. :3
2012-01-10 [Ravendust]: Yeah, I thought I should clarify but hadn't gotten to it^^;; hope you can get into the series :)
2012-01-10 [Nioniel]: Thanks. :)
2012-01-11 [Viking]: I recommend anything I've given a 4 or 5 to on one of these wikis:
Viking's Reading List 2010
Viking's Reading List 2011
Viking's Reading List for the End of the World
=P
2012-01-11 [Nioniel]: Thanks. I'll check 'em out.
2012-01-11 [Nioniel]: Sorry if you all got lots of page updates. I think I'm done prettifying the page. :3
2012-01-11 [Viking]: Ah, Desert of Souls. Good choice!
2012-01-11 [Nioniel]: It sounded good. It seems like you read/have read a lot of series'. This didn't seem like it was a part of one?
2012-01-11 [Viking]: Nope, it's a standalone novel. Though I have read there are some short stories (possibly available online as freebies) that are related.
2012-01-11 [Nioniel]: Oke. Thanks. :3
2012-01-11 [Viking]: Also, you should read anything and everything by Christopher Moore. Except for the Vampire Trilogy - Bloodsucking Fiends, You Suck!, and Bite Me! - they're all standalone. Though sometimes characters from one book show up in another. I've only reviewed a few of them.
2012-01-11 [Lord Josmar]: Do you have to have a picture of the book?
2012-01-11 [Nioniel]: I saw that you gave a great review of "You Suck!" but didn't want to start any trilogies. Two-parters would be okay, but I want to make sure that I'm reading stuff by several authors.
I'll go back and look at other stuff by him, though. ^^
@Jos: what book? O.o
2012-01-11 [Lord Josmar]: The Child Thief for one. I just have a lot of suggestions and I guess I was kinda lazy and didn't want to have to look for a bunch of photos, lol.
The Child Thief by Brom review FMI
2012-01-11 [Nioniel]: Thanks. :3
2012-01-11 [Lord Josmar]: Oh, I got more, lol. Just let me hit up my book shelf and I can give you a slew of good ones.
2012-01-11 [Lord Josmar]: Also, if you give us some kind of idea of what kind of books you like then I think our suggestions would be better.
2012-01-11 [Nioniel]: Nah. I don't even know what I like in books, I just tend to read ones that don't sound horrible. XP That sounds terrible, but I'm not particularly picky when it comes to reading new things. If I don't like it, I won't finish it, and if I do like it, I'll finish it all in one sitting. So really, anything that you'd care to suggest, I'll look into, read the synopsis, and decide if it's something I won't hate. :P
2012-01-11 [Lord Josmar]: Sweet.
2012-01-11 [Nioniel]: :D
2012-01-11 [Linderel]: Anything that there's a heart or an asterisk next to on Lami's Reading List. :P
2012-01-11 [Nioniel]: Thanks Lami.^^
2012-01-11 [Akayume]: White Oleander, Howl's Moving Castle, The Bell Jar. All great. By Janet Finch, Diana Wynne Jones, and Sylvia Plath, respectively. :P All great and three of my most favorite-ist books. Evar. :3
2012-01-11 [Nioniel]: I've already read the first two, but I'll look into The Bell Jar. :3
2012-01-11 [Akayume]: I likes it. :D It's a bit depressing (it's a sort of memoir of her spiral into depression) but I like it. :D
Ps - Have you seen the movie Of WO? It sucked. >.> I was not impressed.
2012-01-11 [Nioniel]: I have, but I don't remember being too excited about it.
2012-01-11 [Nioniel]: Thank you, ladies. :D
2012-01-11 [Viking]: You can start Christopher Moore books with Practical Demonkeeping. It's his first one. And when you read other books of his, you'll say, "Hey, wasn't he the guy from Practical Demonkeeping?"
2012-01-11 [Nioniel]: Oke. :3
2012-01-11 [Lord Josmar]: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies as well as The Zombie Survival Guide. The last one im recommending because it may one day save your life.
2012-01-11 [Nioniel]: I've read The Zombie Survival Guide, but I've been meaning to read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. :3
2012-01-11 [Lord Josmar]: Its pretty good and if tou like it you should read Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Slayer in preparation for the movie.
2012-01-11 [Kestrelfeather]: The entire Ender's Game series and anything by Octavia Butler, especially the Xenogenesis trilogy :)
2012-01-11 [Avaz]: I know the author of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Slayer. :3 He's a cool cat.
2012-01-11 [Lord Josmar]: Unless I am mistaken he is the same person who did the Pride and Prejudice and Zombies books.
You should also read the Bartimaeus Trilogy.
2012-01-11 [Avaz]: Correct.
2012-01-11 [Cillamoon]: Thanks Mel for letting me leave my various references here, I hope you do get more time to read on your hands! :) And I hope you get to read one or two of these also. :)))
Garth Nix (author): Sabriel (along with related books for this series, I forget the series name that it turned into, but it didn't start out as a series)
Harry Turtledove (author) - Into The Darkness
C.S. Friedman (author) - The Coldfire Trilogy (love it sooooo much!!!)
2012-01-11 [Cillamoon]: Oh! Maureen O'Hara's biography: Tis Herself
2012-01-11 [Viking]: I second The Coldfire Trilogy. Excellent books!
2012-01-11 [Cillamoon]: Awesome!!! I've only met two others that have read the series, and I LOOOOOVE them! Even own them, and that's saying something there. I hardly own unless I love them.
2012-01-11 [Lord Josmar]: Oh! Also the First Law Trilogy, but only if you are not adverse to violence, swearing, and sometimes sex.
And The Demonata Series by the same guy who wrote the Cirque Du Freak series, but only if you are not adverse to gross amounts of violence and gore...and I mean gross amounts in lovely detail.
2012-01-12 [Nioniel]: You guys are awesome. ^^ I'll add stuff later, but thank you for all the suggestions.
@Cilla; the first book you suggested came in for me today, so I'll start reading tomorrow. :3
@Jos; not a fan of violence and gore. >_>
2012-01-12 [Lord Josmar]: Peh, what kind of book reader doesn't like a bit of violence?
2012-01-12 [Nioniel]: A bit is different than "gross amounts in lovely detail."
2012-01-12 [Lord Josmar]: Lolz. Yea, it caught me off guard first time I read it.
2012-01-12 [Nioniel]: Thanks Shanny. <3
2012-01-12 [Thrice]: Most welcome.
2012-01-16 [Ariana's Veil]: Lolita- by Vladimir Nabokov. Absolutely amazing book.
2012-01-17 [Nioniel]: Pretty, pretty please don't recommend books that are a part of a series, unless you're recommending the entire series. :3 I just finished reading Polgara, not knowing that it was the end of a whole saga, and as a result, the book didn't make much sense as a stand-alone book, and I was very confused throughout as it kept referencing people, places, and things from previous books in the series. I just don't like panning books that are part of a saga or whatever as stand-alone books, because it's really not fair if it's supposed to be part of a larger story. :P
But keep the suggestions coming, please! I'll add some of the ones already suggested to the top as soon as I get the motivation to go find the images. :P
2012-01-17 [Avaz]: My suggestions are books 1 and 2 of a trilogy, but the third book isn't even written yet. Does that count? As it stands, these two books are all there are.
2012-01-17 [Nioniel]: Nah, that's fine. I just don't want to read a book that's at the end or middle of a series, or else have a whole nine book series to read. That's more what I meant. I'm starting "The Name of the Wind" today. :)
2012-01-17 [Ravendust]: I'll say this- the bishop series that I suggested aren't necessarily connected except for the last 3 books, so you could, say, read them out of order and not be totally confused in the process if it came down to it! xD
2012-01-17 [Avaz]: I noticed! :D I wonder if you're going to fall as head over heels as I am about the books. FWIW, these two books are my most favorite books ever, even beating out the Chronicles of Narnia. And that's an insane feat. :F
2012-01-17 [Nioniel]: Okay, cool. ^^
Ah, I love the Chronicles of Narnia... :)
2012-01-17 [Nioniel]: So the first chapter of "The Name of the Wind" is probably the most perfect first chapter I've ever read. Excellent beginning.
2012-01-18 [Avaz]: I know! I have so much love for this book. ^_^ Pat Rothfuss is easily my favorite author of all time.
2012-01-18 [Nioniel]: It's so good. :3 When I got it from the Library, it's this teeny hardcover with suuuper small print and I practically have to break the binding to read the words closest to middle of the book since it was put together too tightly, but it's totally worth it so far. :P Then the second book came in today, and it's this huuuge hardcover in large print that's about four times the size of the first book. I lol'd.
2012-01-18 [Avaz]: XD I'm kind of surprised at the small-print size of the first book. The paperback version I have is a good two inches thick, if not more. But lol at the second book! That's more like it.:D
2012-01-18 [Nioniel]: Oh yeah, the first one is thick, but small. The second one is just sooo much bigger.
2012-01-18 [Linderel]: Smaller costs less. They were probably worried it wouldn't have any success or something, so they minimised the printing budget. My theory, anyway. :P
2012-01-18 [Nioniel]: :)
2012-01-18 [Avaz]: To be fair, Lindy, it was his first officially published book. And now look, he's on the NY Times' bestsellers list, and his books were voted pretty freakin' high on that one "Best Sci-fi/Fantasy Books of All Time" list - I think BBC did that?
2012-01-18 [Viking]: I had never heard of him before. But I see his series is on this list:
http://m.io9.c
2012-01-18 [Avaz]: Yep. I'll say it again, favorite author of all time. :D
2012-01-18 [Linderel]: [Avaz]: Yes, I thought it might be a debut book. Hence the theory about minimising costs.
2012-01-18 [Avaz]: Aye, makes sense. :)
2012-01-18 [Sideways]: Hai! Nioniel-Sama! You shallt read:
Everything's Eventual by Stephen King
A Song of Ice and Fire: Book I: A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin
and
Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut
these are like my top three all time novels. Each frickin amazing in their own way!
Also answer your messages, dang you!
2012-01-18 [Nioniel]: Not much of a fan of Stephen King, but I'll look into that one. :3
Definitely gonna check out Ice & Fire. ^^
2012-01-18 [Avaz]: You haven't already read the Song of Ice and Fire books yet? I thought you did.
2012-01-18 [Nioniel]: Nope.
2012-01-18 [Sideways]: No spoilers! I'm only on book II A Clash of Kings
if you wanna know how good it is, and what it's about, imagine King Arthur meets LotR, only both Arthur and LotR are Pansy disneyworld shit in comparison.
2012-01-18 [Nioniel]: :D
2012-01-18 [Alexi Ice]: I'm currently reading Wicked Appetite by Janet Evanovich. It's pretty funny. Also, The City of Bones series is really amazing though I haven't the slightest idea as to who writes it.
2012-01-18 [Linderel]: That would be Cassandra Clare.
2012-01-18 [Nioniel]: Thanks, I'll check those out too. :3 I need to add to the page once I feel better. :/
2012-01-19 [Roma]: The Abhorsen Trilogy is a great young adult high fantasy read. It consists of Sabriel (my personal favorite), Lirael, and Abhorsen.
The Chronicles of Prydain is also an excellent children's fantasy series (if you've ever seen The Black Cauldron, a Disney cult classic, these are the books from which the story was rendered). The books in the series are as follows: The Book of Three, The Black Cauldron, The Castle of Llyr, Taran Wanderer, and The High King.
Ishmael by Daniel Quinn will make you see the world in another light.
The Call of Cthulu by H.P. Lovecraft is a classic short story that should be read by everyone.
The Eyes of the Dragon is a fantasy novel by Stephen King, and is probably one of my favorite high fantasy stories of all time. With his storytelling and his penchant for putting his own spin on things, I promise you'll not encounter a book half as original...whi
2012-01-19 [Akayume]: I agree with the Abhorsen Trilogy. :D I loved it when I read it.
2012-01-19 [Linderel]: Oooh, ooooh! The Eyes of the Dragon is my favourite King novel. :) I should really read it in English at some point.
Pssst. You mean "penchant". /resident nitpicker
2012-01-19 [Avaz]: Hey, you don't know. Maybe he has an account set up that funds his putting a spin on things. :P
2012-01-19 [Linderel]: That would actually be kind of cool. :P
2012-01-20 [Nioniel]: My goal is to finish The Name of the Wind today, and then to start and finish the second book by the end of next week. Everything up there has been requested from the Library, so I need to start reading more so I don't just have a huge pile of borrowed books sitting beside my bed for months. :P
2012-01-20 [Avaz]: I'm on pins, can't wait to hear your thoughts on them when you finish. (Don't say anything yet!) :D
2012-01-21 [Akayume]: I used to do that when I was a kid. XD I had library books e'rywhere. XD
2012-01-25 [Nioniel]:
2012-01-26 [Viking]: That's quite a nice selection of books!
2012-01-26 [Nioniel]: So much to get through before they're due back!
2012-01-26 [Viking]: You can do it!
2012-01-26 [Nioniel]: :D
2012-01-26 [Viking]: Also, you should read Practical Demonkeeping next.
2012-01-26 [Nioniel]: Nope. I'm reading "Wise Man's Fear" next as it's the second book in the series after the one I'm currently reading. I'll read "Practical Demonkeepin" after that, though. :) It does look interesting.
2012-01-26 [Ravendust]: I think I'm gonna set up a reading list myself, I really need to get some reading in xD
2012-01-26 [Viking]: Ah, good call on continuing the series. Otherwise you start to forget things.
2012-01-26 [Nioniel]: Yeah. :)
2012-01-26 [Nioniel]: 6:08 a.m. I stayed up all night reading "The Name of the Wind," and I finished it. What a perfect book. :3
2012-01-26 [Avaz]: I don't wanna say I toldja so. But, yeah. :D
2012-01-26 [Nioniel]: *poke* But I never disagreed with you! :O
2012-01-26 [Avaz]: Well, technically you're right. But I guess what I was trying to get at is, "See? It's every bit as win as I declared, therefore my fanboyism is validated and vindicated!" :D
2012-01-26 [Nioniel]: Ahhh... ^^
2012-01-26 [Lord Josmar]: Pff. You should've started with Child Thief first...
2012-01-26 [Nioniel]: O.o I didn't have it first. I started reading "The Name of the Wind" before "The Child Thief" came in for me from the Library..
2012-01-27 [Nioniel]: I changed the order up a bit. I'll read "Practical Demonkeeping" and then "The Child Thief" after I finish "Wise Man's Fear". :3
2012-01-27 [Lord Josmar]: Lolz.
2012-01-27 [Viking]: I'm gonna add The Child Thief to my list.
2012-01-27 [Lord Josmar]: It's really good and I think on Brom's Facebook page he mentioned them trying to get a movie deal for it.
2012-01-27 [Lord Josmar]: And if you like Child Thief then you should check out his shorter stories: Devil's Rose and The Plucker. Both are quick reads, but Devil's Rose is much shorter.
2012-02-02 [Nioniel]: I'm almost done with Wise Man's Fear, and I don't think I'll be able to write a review without spoilers. :/ So [Avaz], you may want to avoid reading the review when I post it until after you've finished the book.
2012-02-02 [Linderel]: I'm still recommending Beauty! :P
2012-02-02 [Avaz]: I fully intend to avoid that one. :D
2012-02-02 [Nioniel]: Thanks Lami. :) I'll have to update my list tonight with the stuff everyone's suggested.
2012-02-06 [Nioniel]: [Avaz]: I posted my review and did my best to keep from any spoilers. Though if you're barely into the book, you shouldn't read the review. I only really mentioned a few things at the beginning that set the rest of the book into motion, but still. I don't want to ruin it for you. :/
2012-02-06 [Avaz]: I'm probably about a third of the way into it. Even still, I'll avoid the review for the time being, until I'm done with it.
Besides, I still have to get around to reviewing the couple books I've read in the interim, but need to find the time first. >_>
2012-02-08 [Nioniel]: For those who have read/enjoyed The Coldfire Trilogy, FYI, there's a fourth book that's supposed to be a prequel called Dominion that's going to be (or may have already been?) released this year. Dunno if that's of interest to anyone. I couldn't find it in the Library system.
Anyway, I just added the Trilogy to my read-list. :P
2012-02-10 [Sideways]: Coldfire? Sounds like a rip off of A Song of Ice and Fire. George R.R. Martin has demonstrably dethroned Tolkian. His books are AWESOME! Now I know Nio-Chan doesn't love me o~o she won't put A Game of Thrones on her list!
2012-02-15 [Nioniel]: [Avaz], I think you've ruined reading for me. I'm staring at this huge pile of something like 20 books I'm supposed to be reading and all I can think is "they won't be as good as the Kingkiller Chronicle" so I lose motivation to start them. I can't believe we have to wait until May to read the next book in the series. :(
2012-02-15 [Thrice]: Well you dont have to read my suggestion. The more i think about it the more i think you wont like it. Excuse horible typos and grammar.. on tablet.
2012-02-15 [Nioniel]: I'll read all the stuff that's up there, I just need to find the motivation. :P
2012-02-15 [Avaz]: Haha, sorry! But I definitely know what you mean. That's exactly why I stopped reading WMF partway so I could get the other books out of the way first... and then have the satisfaction of coming back to the greatest series of all time :D
And May can't come soon enough!
2012-02-15 [Nioniel]: :P
2012-02-15 [Akayume]: Mebbe I should read this series... >.> I am a little disappointed in Brooks. :/ His novels lack character development. E'ry time a character dies I'm like... Oh well. >.> Usually I frickin' cry and so far e'ry death I'm like... Meh.
2012-02-15 [Nioniel]: You should definitely read the Kingkiller Chronicle. I finished reading the second book over a week ago and my mind is still racing about it.
2012-02-16 [Nioniel]: Shanny, I'm reading Wintergirls now, and I do like it. The writing style is lovely and poetic, which makes the dark subject matter somehow ...okay, in contrast. Interesting...
Already halfway done with it, actually. ^^
2012-02-16 [Akayume]: *might have to read this too* :P
2012-02-17 [Akayume]: wait why is winter girls on there twice? O.o
2012-02-17 [Nioniel]: Ah. Because I moved it up since it was the next thing I read, but forgot to remove it from it's lower position afterwards.
2012-02-17 [Akayume]: Ohhhh I see I see. At first I thought mebbe it was a sequel or something but then I was like noooo... O.o
2012-02-17 [Nioniel]: Nuu. :P
2012-02-24 [Nioniel]: Must do some reading. Motivation ran away. :/
2012-02-24 [Akayume]: Is oke. <3
2012-02-24 [Nioniel]: I've renewed the books from the library twice already, so the order in which I need to read them has been shuffled around as a result. I just have too many distractions around here *cough*interne
2012-06-25 [Nioniel]: Well. This kind of just got put on hold. :/
I am currently rereading The Name of the Wind, as the third book was supposed to be released this past May, but got postponed until May of next year.
I'll probably switch some of the books out of here, simply because I now currently lack any real access to some of them. However, I do have the Kindle App, and have fantastic access to a lot of awesome books that don't cost anything to read.
Not that I'd ever want to read anything new ever again after coming across The Kingkiller Chronicle. Thanks, [Avaz]. Definitely got me addicted. :P
2012-06-25 [Avaz]: It's the best books ever written. I finished book 2 and was like, PAT ROTHFUSS, Y U NO WRITE FASTER?
2012-06-25 [Nioniel]: No kidding. >.<
